Good sport, Tim McCleave donned the school dress and raised $30 for Surfers In A Dress and One Girl by eating a dry Weet-Bix in under one minute. Well done for completing the dare, Tim! Note: the slow motion thing makes this video slightly creepy. #surfersinadress #dareinadress Here's the speech Greg delivered to everyone who attended Surfers In A Dress on Saturday the 17th October 2015.
--- Thank you. You’re all amazing to be here! You might not all realise this, but you’re all here making a big difference. You should be proud of yourselves. We live in the most beautiful place in the world. We are granted the opportunity to achieve whatever we set our minds to in life. At a basic level, we have all had the privilege of getting an education. But, not everyone is as fortunate as we are. In fact, 66 million girls worldwide dont have access to education and this has an adverse affect on their lives. And that’s the reason why you are all here today. Education. Empowerment. Opportunities. A positive future. I’d like to paint you a picture of what it’s like to be a girl in a place like Sierra Leone, West Africa. Imagine yourself as a girl living in Sierra Leone. Imagine if your mother was sold to be married at the age of 14. Imagine if who she married was 4 times her age. Yes, that could be around 50-60 years old! Imagine if your mother gave birth to you when she was 15. Imagine that you mother never had the opportunity to get an education because she was forced to marry and to have children. Because of the lack of education, you mother wasn’t able to get a good job to support the family. Your family barely has enough money to send one child to school, but because you’re a girl, you have less rights, so unfortunately you miss out from getting an education. Now you’re 14. Uneducated. Your family sells you to be married to a 50-60 year old man. And the cycle continues. To be a girl in Sierra Leone isn’t pretty. Now imagine if your mother had the opportunity to get an education. Statistically speaking, in Sierra Leone, if a girl is educated:
We’re here today to go surfing in a dress. To raise awareness that the small change we give today, can make a huge change to the girls in Sierra Leone. We’re here in support of One Girl: a charity that provides education scholarships for these girls. Because of you, Surfers In A Dress has since raised over $30,000 which has helped more than 100 girls get access to education. This wouldn’t have been possible without your support, so on behalf of the Surfers In A Dress team, we thank you. Now let’s go surfing in a dress!!! Surfers In A Dress was featured on Weekend Sunrise this morning for One Girl and International Day of the Girl. A massive thanks to @chantellebaxter for the shoutout. #surfersinadress #girlseducation #genderequality #sierraleone #uganda #SIAD15 #IDG2015 #bondibeach #bondi #surf #doitinadress #education #changemakers #changetheworld #charity #goodcause #girleffect #inspiration #makeadifference #bethechange @onegirlorg #doitinadress 📷 by @picturessharp @sunriseon7 We all wouldn't be here if it wasn't for a special woman in your life.
Tomorrow is International Day of the Girl. Have a think about how different your life would be if your mother never had the opportunity to get a school education because they were forced into marriage at the age of 14 and gave birth to you at 15yo. I find it unbelievable, but this scenario is very common for girls in places such as Sierra Leone and Uganda. If a girl gets an education and stays in school they will marry later and have fewer children. They will secure a better job and invest more money and knowledge into the wellbeing of their families. And just like that this girl has a stronger future and so does her children. It's a ripple effect. When you educate a girl, you educate a nation. Help educate a girl today: surfersinadress.com/donate #surfersinadress #girlseducation #genderequality #sierraleone #uganda #SIAD15 #IDG2015 #bondibeach #bondi #surf #doitinadress #education #changemakers #changetheworld #charity #goodcause #girleffect #inspiration #makeadifference #bethechange @onegirlorg #doitinadress That's right. You've seen us surfing in dresses and now you're going to see us RUN in dresses.
A few of the Surfers In A Dress team are swapping the boards for the sneakers and will be running in the real insurance Sydney Harbour 10K run. We're raising money to help girls in Sierra Leone and Uganda get access to education. If you would like to show your support please donate here - surfersinadress.com/donate The legends who directed and produced the promotional videos for Surfers In A Dress have recently launched their new website, and it looks schmicko! Right here: http://www.sharppictures.com.au/ Not only that, but the promotional videos have been featured on the site too! Check it out. Surfers In A Dress was thanked by One Girl today and I want to thank everyone for your support this year. We are making a difference. Greg x Wow! What a day! Surfers In A Dress were interviewed at Bondi Beach this afternoon for SBS World News. Then an interview with 2GB Radio 873AM, which will air tomorrow morning. To keep in line with today being the International Day of the Girl, we discussed why wearing a dress and going surfing to send a girl in Sierra Leone to school, is our part in improving gender equality in the world. It's unfortunate that many girls are deprived the right to an education. But, if WE can provide them with the opportunity then it will have a ripple effect on their life, and their future family. WE have the power to empower - and that's why @onegirlorg and Surfers In A Dress do what we do. Donate: surfersinadress.com/donate Event: Sunday, 12 Oct, Bondi Beach, 10:30am-12:30pm. A massive thanks to all who made it down at a moment's notice: Nic Claase, Mark Greenham, Si Muddell, Tim McLeave, Ed Stephens, Ed Womersley, Philip Conway, Adam Yu, Jayne Rais and Tim Denoodle. We were fortunate enough to be featured in The Wentworth Courier this week. It was a great little write-up and I'm so stoked to see the surfersinadress.com website being in print! Sweet!
The shoot was taken at Bondi Beach on Friday, 3 October 2014 at 8am - right after the One Wave Is All It Takes weekly event, Fluro Friday. A massive thanks to John Appleyard, Photographer for the Wentworth Courier, and of course the boys who were keen to chuck on a dress for the shoot: Ed Stephens, Adam Yu (from The Why You Collective), and Grant Trebilco (co-founder of OneWave). Getting pumped for the big event now. Sunday, 12 October on Bondi Beach from 10:30am - 12:30pm. For more details, click here. I am absolutely thrilled to announce that Sharp Pictures will be filming all the action of Surfers In A Dress at Bondi Beach this Sunday morning, 12 October, between 10:30am - 12:30pm. This will be the first time Surfers In A Dress will be filmed in such detail, so it's super exciting to have this opportunity. Sharp Pictures are a great bunch. Their work is top-notch, too.
